Use A Word

Words are one of the most amazing inventions of the human race. But they don't work if we forget to use them when we get upset, or if we use them carelessly or hurtfully.  This song's title gives teachers/parents a powerful catch phrase that becomes part of the classroom/family lexicon and instantly communicates the ideas of using restraint and tact, making good  choices and seeking conflict resolution.  Parents and kids love this song.

Stress that while hands should not be used to hurt others, that there are many positive things that we can do with out hands. Create a class big book called Hands Can ...

Steps

1. Brainstorm with the class all the wonderful things that hands can do.

2. Give each child a large sheet of paper. Each page will start with the text:
“Hands can ___________.”
The student will fill in the blank. Children make their handprints on their page and illustrate their text.

3. The last page of the book states, “But hands do not hurt.” Each child can sign their name on this page.

4. You can make a tape of the book by having each child read their page and put the book and tape at the listening station.
